Overview

Thulo Shailung Shamanism Trek, is a meeting point of nature and religion is another incentive of Dolakha. It is described as one of the holy places for both Hinduism and Buddhism followers. Situated at the altitude of 3150m in between Dolakha and Ramechhap. Sailung is one of the best places to see a vast Himalayan range from Makalu to Dhaulagiri.

Sailung Dada (hill) is another Hindu Pilgrimage site where hundreds and thousands of devotees visit on Janai Purnima. Lkewise, in Balachaturdashi, falls in Novemeber, and the Bara Barse Mela (carnival that occurs once in 12 years). On the occasion of Janai Purnima, on the full moon of July/August.  From many different ethnics group and including, Tamang pilgrim’s crowd around the ruined Chortens at the highest point of Thulo Sailung. No blood sacrifices are permitted on Thulo Shailung Shamanism Trek. As the shaman’s surrender to Buddhist Dominance and refrain from offering blood to the fierce female deities.

Similarly, other sites of interest around Thulo Sailung include three formations of a tiger, snake, and cow representing the coexistence between Buddhist, Shamanic, and Hindu beliefs. It is also acclaimed as one of the places Gautam Buddha visited during his lifetime. Also, during the day time, 13 colors of the sun can be seen from there. Sailung Dada is famous as a Natural view tower and is rich in Tamang culture. From this viewpoint, on a clear day, 80% of the Himalayan ranges can be seen including, Kathmandu Valley and Terai regions. These hills are covered with snow for two months during the winter season.

Below the summit of Thulo Sailung there is Gaurighat cave situated, it is believed that on full moon nights ‘milk’ is said to ooze from the stalactites inside the cave. The cave is believed to be a source of fertility and health. Pilgrims pray there for their children to relief from illness and for personal success and wealth. The cave is also designed the entrance to the netherworld, the realm of the Nagas serpent deity. It is believed that when a yogi meditates inside the cave for five years, a door leading to the interior of the mountain had been appearing.

A second cave is locally known as ‘Buddha’s Gate’ or the ‘Door of Karma’ has an exit hole that almost too small for human passage. Only the most devout Buddhist and Hindus believer who has not committed any crime can pass the exit hole. Embrace through in the hope of ridding yourself of sin and emerge pure. Godavari Cave in the third small cave. It’s believed that every twelve years at the full moon of August/September white water is said to flow in which Hindu’s take a pure sacred bath to ritually purify the body. Sailung is an auspicious place for shamans and on the trek, we learn the reason for that.

Day 01

KTM Arrival pick up from Airport and welcoming by garland and transfer to Hotel. O/N Hotel DBB

On your arrival day in Kathmandu, You will be received by the representative staff from Himalayan Trails Trekking & Climbing P. Ltd with proper greeting. When you have had your time to settle in and freshen up. In the afternoon, you will visit our office there will be short trip briefing and introduction with your trekking guide. In the evening, there will be a welcome dinner hosted by Himalayan Trails Trekking & Climbing. For dinner, you will be served excellent cuisine.

Day 02

Sightseeing world heritage sights Hindus & Buddhist shrines / Trek preparation O/ N Hotel B/B

The very next morning, after breakfast you will leave for a half day sightseeing tour around Kathmandu valley. Some of these landmarks are considered World Heritage Sites including the historic Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the famous ‘Monkey Temple’ (Swayambhunath) and Buddhist shrine (Bouddhanath) which is one of the largest stupas in the world. In the afternoon, you will visit our office there will be short trip briefing and introduction with your trekking guide. After short briefing you can hang out to the necessary places you might need to go before trekking like, Money changer, ATM, Market ETC. In the evening, there will be a welcome dinner hosted by Himalayan Trails Trekking & Climbing. For dinner, you will be served excellent cuisine.

Day 03

Kathmandu-Mude (5/6 hour drive)-Dhunge (03hrs hike) O/N Lodge – (BLD)

After having breakfast early in the morning we start drive from Kathmandu to Dhunge takes 5-6 hours. On the trail, you will find magnificent views of Mount Gaurishankar (7134 m).

Day 04

Dhunge to Sailung hill trek towards Khola Kharka (3/4 hrs hike) O/N Lodge – (BLD)

Our trip starts from here. After having breakfast we start walking towards Sailung. We will take some packed lunch. We have to walk 3 to 4 hours to reach there. The trail was amidst the jungle and slippery narrow paths due to the snowfall. From the top of sailing danda we can observ the hillocks all around and also the mountains surrounding the landscape. In winter, snow covers this hill for two months. It is also popular as the place where Gautam Buddha had visited and the place where 13 colors of the sun can be seen in a day. The area is a famous as Natural view tower and also rich in Tamang culture. Following the short trail down to the Sherpa village of Khola Kharka.

Day 05

Khola Kharka to Shailung hill (01 hrs) Shamanism Ceremony in the afternoon then returns back to Dhunge O/N Lodge – (BLD)

The next morning wake up early in the morning and start walking towards the Sailung hill which will take 15-20 mins staircase walk then you will reach the final view tower. Do not miss the sunrise and the early view. You will be blessed with amazing and spectacular views. Sailung offers magnificent views over Kalinchowk to the Annapurna, Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Rowaling, Everest and Kanchenjunga ranges, to the South the Mahabharata hills roll over the Sun Koshi River and down to the Terai below. After witnessing these magnificent views you will observe Shamanic Ceremony. The Chortens Buddhist Priests perform ‘Mandala offerings’ for the rebirth of the souls of the deceased. The lingoes surrounding the Chorten were erected during Tamang death rituals and are left there to succumb to the forces of nature. Tamang pilgrims crowd around the ruined Chortens at the highest point of Thulo Sailung. Nowadays, no blood sacrifices are permitted on Thulo Sailung. The shamans have surrendered to Buddhist Dominance and refrain from offering blood to the fierce female deities. Other sites of interest around Thulo Sailung include three rocks – tiger, snake and cow representing the Hindu, Buddhist and Shamanic simultaneous rivalry and co-existence. After taking in the sublime beauty of Shailung top, we descended the same way to Dhunge.

After having breakfast, we will drive back to Kathmandu. Once we each Kathmandu, you will check- in to the hotel.

You are free to spend the day at your leisure to relax, refresh, and perhaps take a trip to explore more of the city, before the group’s final evening celebrating huge achievement with a special dinner. Around the evening, we will take you for a farewell dinner. While having dinner, we will also discuss your trip and take feedback.
