Overview
Gosainkunda Shamanism Trek or Lake is considered as one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Nepal. Located at an altitude of 4360m. The lake is situated in Langtang National Park of Rasuwa District and surrounding by mountains. It is also spelle as Gosainkunda. The lake is accompanied by nine other lakes. The Gosaikunda area is well-considered as a religious site and is devoted to Lord Shiva and Goddess Gauri. Its holy water is considered important especially during the Janai Purnima, sacred thread changing festival. On this special day, this place observes maximum Hindu devotees from Nepal, India, and other countries.
In winter season the lake remains frozen for six months and the ice from the lake melts down to form Trishuli River. In the month of August during the festival of Janai Purnima. Every year, a large number of devotees come to take a holy bath in the river. There is a big rock in the middle of the lake which is believed to be the remains of the Shiva shrine. It is also said that medium relay water directly from the lake to the tank at the Kumbheshwar Temple in Patan in the Kathmandu Valley.
Similarly, Shamans attend the festival to gain and renew spiritual power and pray for deceased Shamans. Shamans perform their special spiritual dance and sing a song during the ceremony. On this day is considere holy by the shamans, where by apprentices or “junior Jhankris” obtain graduation from their masters or senior shamans. It is believe that taking a holy dip in the cold water of Gosaikunda Lake releases one person from all the sins they have committed.

A beautiful mountain lake in Nepal
Gosainkunda Shamanism Trek, is thirteen days trek will give you an opportunity to observe from close quarters. The religious belief and practice of the Shamans. Thousands of people gathered on this high alpine lake at about 4,360m. To pay due respect to the shamans and renew their faith with centuries-old practices and beliefs. The main focus of this trek is the cultural aspect of the shamans and their rituals but on the other side. This trip also offers you a great trek into some of the most beautiful areas of the Langtang region.
During your 10 days trek you will wetness high alpine meadows, glacial lakes, and snow-clad high peaks, etc. On the way you will come across various ethnic groups. Likewise, Brahmins and Chettris from the low hills to Tamangs and Bhotiyas of the Tibeto-Burmese stock in the highlands. This will give you a real vision into the cultural and religious diversity of Nepal.

On your arrival day in Kathmandu, You will be received by the representative staff from Himalayan Trails Trekking & Climbing P. Ltd with proper greeting. When you have had your time to settle in and freshen up. You will visit our office in the afternoon, for short trip briefing and introduction with your trekking guide. In the evening, there will be a welcome dinner program hosted by Himalayan Trails Trekking & Climbing. For dinner, you will be served excellent cuisine.

Sightseeing world heritage sights Hindus & Buddhist shrines / Trek preparation O/N Hotel – (BB)
The very next morning, after breakfast you will leave for a half day sightseeing tour around Kathmandu valley. Some of these landmarks are concluded in UNESCO world heritage sites of Nepal, including the historic Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the famous ‘Monkey Temple’ (Swayambhunath) and Buddhist shrine (Bouddhanath) which is one of the largest stupas in the world. After sightseeing you can hang out to the necessary places you might need to go before trekking like, Money changer, ATM, Market ETC.

Kathmandu – Sundarijal an hour drive and trek to Chisapani (2,215m) 4/5hrs O/N Lodge – (BLD)
After breakfast drive to Sundarijal which takes about 35 to-40 minutes from Kathmandu. We observe Sundarijal water fall and water shed which is supplied to Kathmandu Valley, and passing by Tamang Village on the way to Chisopani via Mulkharka. We go through deep forest after Mulkhara. After 4-5 hours of hike takes us to Chisapani.

Chisapani –Kutumsang (2,465m) 6/7hrs O/N Lodge – (BLD)
After breakfast we continue our trekking towards Kutumsang, passing through classic, delightful village with some shops and good mountain views. We walk uphill and downhill and pass through Gulbhanjyang, the Sherpa, Gurung, and Tamang settlement. Gulbhanjyang showcases the cultural aspect of local ethnic people. Crossing the jungle and terraced fields, we finally reach Kutumsang.

Kutumsang –Thadepatti (3,510m) 7hrs O/N Lodge – (BLD)
After breakfast we climb up in a steep and eroded trail passing through the rhododendron and fir forest. The beautiful sunset view awaits you as you reach Tharepati. Enjoy the nice views of Jugal Himal, Numbur Himal, and of course the awesome views of Helambu Valley right below.

Thadepati –Phedi (3,630m) 5hrs O/N Lodge – (BLD)
After breakfast from Tharepati , we stat our trek initially descending clings to the mountainside and winds its way through rhododendron forests to Phedi. There is a small chorten here to Japanese who died in 1992 when a Thai Airways Airbus crashed into a mountainside near here killing all 113 people on board.

Phedi – Gosainkunda (4,385m) 5hrs via Laurebinayak Pass (4,615m) O/N Lodge – (BLD)
After breakfast trek up into the mountains through Laurebinayak Pass, with views of peaks in either direction, and we may well cross the snowline. We then trek down to the miraculous holy lakes of Gosaikunda. Surrounded by huge mountains on the north and east, this lake is terrific and scenic, and the Trishuli River originates from the ponds of Gosaikunda. It is believed that in ancient time during samundramanthan lord Shiva drank the poison and desperately wanted cold water to drink quenching the overwhelming heat of the poison so he dig of the land by the his Trishul (holy 3-pointed sword) and by this process this lake has been discovered . The huge rock in the center of the lake is said to be the remains of a Shiva shrine and it is also claimed that channel carries water from the lake directly to the tank at the Kumbheshwar Temple in Patan of Kathmandu valley.

Gosainkunda Shamanism Festival, Obeserve the festival.
Janai Festival Day: Participate in festival, enjoy the dance performed by Shamans and explore the Lauribina La pass and Surya Peak,Ganesh kunda and Surya Kunda. It is believed that if one prayed and bathed in those ponds, one would get fulfilled one’s wish and salvation in life. Local dances such as Syabru, Mane, and shamanism of typical Tamang (Buddhist) culture that performed on the occasion would enhance the fair robustly. Shamans perform the very tantric dance in their strange costumes representing of ancient and medieval ages. Shamans also perform bizarre and weird dances in the fair.

Gosainkunda– Chandanbari (2,350m) 4-5 hrs O/N Lodge – (BLD)
After breakfast trek back to Chandanbari. It will take around five hours. Chandanbare is small town with few lodges and Monastery. The Cheese factory here is the oldest in Nepal. The trail descends all the way to Sing Gompa passing Laurebenayak with magnificent mountain views and forests. We can view rhododendron and pine forest trees and vista of Ganesh Himal, Langtang Lirung, and Manaslu range, Hiunchuli and Tibetan peak throughout the trail.

Chandanbari – Dhunche (1,980m) 4-5 hrs O/N Lodge – (BLD)
After taking morning breakfast, our trail directly drop us downhill to Dhunche via small village of Ramche and other village along the route. Trails will be more enjoyable and beautiful. The trail descends through pine, silver oak and rhododendrons forests with marijuana. Then we cross suspension bridge over the Sing Gompa Stream. Now the path stretches at flat level through some human settlements and mineral water factories up to Dhunche. It is a small town and headquarters of Rasuwa district. Finally we arrive in Dhunche.

Dhunche –KTM Drive Back -6 to 7 hrs O/N Hotel – (BB)
After having breakfast, we drive back to Kathmandu. It is a pleasant drive back to Kathmandu enjoying the natural varieties of Nepal. We reach Kathmandu after 6 to 7 hours long drive. Transfer to the hotel and rest. ]

You are free to spend the day at your leisure to relax, refresh, and perhaps take a trip to explore more of the city, before the group’s final evening celebrating huge achievement with a special dinner. Around the evening, we will take you for a farewell dinner. While having dinner, we will also discuss your trip and take feedback.
