Single Day Hike to Shivapuri day-trip is ideal for anyone spending an extra day in Kathmandu. However, will help you get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and into the calmness and serenity of a quiet hike in the Shivapuri National Park. Shivapuri Nagarjun National park offers the best hike and trek around Kathmandu. The hike to Shivapuri hill (2,732 m) from the northern border of Kathmandu takes about 8 hrs. Single-day hike to Shivapuri is the second highest hill around Kathmandu. Shivapuri has remained untouched because of its religious significance and importance as a watershed supplying water to Kathmandu.

Likewise, in 1975, conservation work was started with its proclamation as Shivapuri watershed and wildlife reserve. And in 2002, it was given the status of Shivapuri National Park and in 2009. It expanded, covering 159sq km with the addition of Nagarjun forest reserve. A size it still presently holds. The park includes some historical and religious sites and a popular hiking route for local people and tourists. Shivpuri is described in the Skanda Purana’s Nepalmahatmya as “auspicious place of Lord Shiva, filled with Shiva lingams.

The single-day hike to Shivapuri trails is especially popular with trekkers and mountain bikers. Who can climb up to sights such as the Buddhist Nagi Gompa Nuns monastery? Where about a hundred nuns live with spectacular views over the green valley slopes and the Himalayan backdrop. Visitors can go up even higher and follow the trail up to over 2,700 meters to the second highest peak of Kathmandu Valley. At on top, the origin of the Bagmati River, one of the main sources of drinking water in the valley, flows out of the mouth of two tigers – an imposing sight.

After having breakfast then drive to Budhanilkantha and tour the temple area. Its major attraction is the huge statue of Bishnu, one of the primary Hindugods reclining in a bed of serpents in a pond. From Budhanilkantha we walk through Shivapuri conservation area. This is the Government protected forest where over 500 species of vegetation are found. We start our hike from the southern boundary of the area where the army check post is located. We walk up-hill about 3km to the NagiGompa. By far the most rewarding route to the peak from Budhanilkantha isn’t the direct ascent up the steps, but starts with a walk east along a dirt road to Nagi Gompa, a former Tamang monastery gifted to the renowned lama Urgyen Rinpoche, and now occupied by nuns along with the occasional Western dharma student sent up from Boudha. From the Gompa the trail then travels steeply uphill through the oak, rhododendron and bamboo forest via Baghdwar which is believed to be the source of the holy Bagmati River. From the top you can enjoy the beauty of the snowy Himalayas such as Ganesh Himal, Langtang-Lirung, Dorji Lhakpa as well as magnificent views of Kathmandu Valley below. We take short lunch break and stroll around for sometimes, then we take a short cut downhill trail to Budhanilkantha for about and half hours and drive back to Kathmandu.
